FAQs

Welcome! If you’re here, you’re probably curious — about the work, the impact, and whether a Global Protagonists mission is right for you.

Below you’ll find honest answers to the most common questions we’re asked. And if something’s still unclear? Get in touch. We’d much rather talk things through than leave you guessing.

What’s a Global Protagonist – and who is this for?

A Global Protagonist is someone who doesn’t just want to see conservation – they want to be part of it.
Our missions are for curious, thoughtful people who care deeply about wildlife, nature, and the planet, and who want to contribute meaningfully rather than passively observe. You don’t need to come from a conservation background. You just need an open mind, a willingness to learn, and a desire to step into the story rather than stand on the sidelines.
If you’ve ever felt frustrated by traditional wildlife travel, or wondered whether there was a more meaningful way to engage with conservation – you’re probably in the right place.

What makes The Global Protagonists different?

We don’t run trips. We run missions.
That distinction matters.

The Global Protagonists was born out of the field – not the travel industry.

Our founding team had spent over a decade working on the frontlines of conservation and kept seeing the same problem from both sides. On one side, critical conservation projects that needed funding and manpower to survive – projects at real risk of stalling or collapsing without support. On the other, people who genuinely cared – professionals and members of the public alike – who wanted to help, but had no meaningful way to do so.

We exist to bridge that gap.

Our work is grounded in over a decade of frontline conservation experience and guided by an overarching conservation strategy, not tourism trends. Every mission is built around real, partner-identified conservation priorities, with clear, measurable outcomes.

What sets us apart:
  • Real projects, real need – no staged activities or conservation theatre
  • Designed by conservationists with 10+ years of field experience, who came together to create a model that funds conservation work and opens the door for people to meaningfully participate
  • A clear conservation strategy behind every mission, with defined outcomes
  • No private ranch model – we do not operate on properties focused on breeding and selling endangered species rather than restoring ecosystems or supporting reintroduction
  • Total transparency – both financial and impact reporting
  • Ongoing monitoring – impact does not end when the mission does
  • A personalised Impact Report at the end of every mission – so you know exactly what your time, effort, and contribution supported
  • An Annual Impact Report, shared with all Global Protagonists and published publicly, detailing what was achieved across our projects each year
Our aim is simple: you should leave knowing your presence mattered.

Do I need to be a vet or have conservation qualifications?

No. Most of our missions are designed for beginners, students, and conservation-curious adults.
You don’t need a wildlife background to take part meaningfully. If a mission requires specific professional skills, this will be clearly stated on the mission page.
On arrival, everyone is onboarded and trained by the field team. We equip you with the knowledge and context you need to participate fully – whether that’s supporting darting operations, data collection, community work, or monitoring activities.

Will I be hands-on even if I’m a beginner?

Yes – within ethical, welfare-first boundaries.
Hands-on involvement is a core part of our missions, but it is never about entertainment, photo opportunities, or unnecessary interaction. All activities are purpose-driven, supervised, and aligned with positive animal welfare principles.
You’ll be trained, briefed, and supported every step of the way, and your role will always be appropriate to your experience and the needs of the project.

Is this safe?

Safety is taken extremely seriously.
Each mission follows strict safety protocols and is delivered by experienced, professional field teams. You’ll receive a full safety briefing on arrival, and all activities are supervised by trained leaders and local hosts.
You’ll be part of a small, well-supported group, with clear communication and experienced guidance throughout the mission.

Do I need vaccinations or travel insurance?

Requirements vary by country and mission.
Once you sign up, you’ll receive clear guidance on recommended vaccinations and health considerations specific to your destination. We strongly encourage all participants to arrange comprehensive travel insurance before travelling.

What is your refund policy?

Our refund policy is designed to be fair while protecting the conservation work your participation supports.

Traveler-initiated cancellations:
  • Deposit: Non-refundable
  • More than 60 days before the mission start date: 80% refund of payments made (excluding the non-refundable deposit)
  • 30–59 days before the mission start date: 50% refund of payments made (excluding the non-refundable deposit)
  • 29 days or less before the mission start date: No refund
  • Exceptional circumstances: Assessed on a case-by-case basis
Company-initiated changes or cancellations:
In rare cases, we may need to change or cancel a mission due to weather, local conditions, or other unforeseen operational requirements. If this occurs, you may choose to:
  • Join the mission on the revised dates
  • Transfer your place to a future mission
  • Receive a full refund, including your deposit
We will support you through the process to ensure the best possible outcome.

What’s included – and what’s not?

Your mission fee includes everything you need on the ground.

Included:
  • Accommodation
  • Meals
  • Ground transport during the mission
  • Project costs and conservation contributions
  • Equipment, training, and supervision
  • Access to conservation teams and projects
  • Your personalised Impact Report after the mission
Not included:
  • International flights
  • Personal travel insurance
  • Personal expenses outside the mission itinerary
Importantly, your fee directly funds real conservation work – whether that’s tracking collars, vaccines, camera traps, ranger training, or community-led initiatives. You won’t just hear about it. You’ll see it reflected in your impact report.

There’s not much about you online… are you real?

We get this one a lot – and it’s a fair question.
We’ve only been operational for around 18 months, and we’ve been very busy doing the work itself. Until recently, our focus has been on building strong partnerships, delivering meaningful missions, and making sure our impact is real before shouting about it.
We’re actively building out more content, storytelling, and transparency as we grow – and we’re proud to let the work speak first.

Is there an age limit?

We don’t have a set age limit.
Most participants are typically in their early 30s through to their late 50s and beyond, depending on the mission. For example, on our Snow Leopard mission, the current group spans roughly early 30s to mid-50s.
What matters most to us is curiosity, adaptability, and being comfortable in a field-based environment.
We’re actively building out more content, storytelling, and transparency as we grow – and we’re proud to let the work speak first.

How big are the groups?

Our missions are intentionally small.
Group sizes are typically 8–12 participants, allowing for meaningful involvement, strong support from our partners, and a deeper group experience.

Can I join solo?

Absolutely. Most people do.
Around four weeks before the mission, we connect the whole group so everyone can introduce themselves, ask questions, and start getting to know one another. That group often stays connected long after the mission ends.
You’ll also receive a detailed onboarding welcome email covering travel logistics, packing guidance, and what to expect – and our team is always available to support you before departure.

Can you accommodate dietary requirements?

Yes – absolutely no problem.
Vegetarian and other dietary requirements are easily accommodated on all missions. One of our team members is vegan, and many of our team members are vegetarian. In some destinations, such as India, this is especially common.
Just let us know in advance.

How do you ensure this isn’t “voluntourism”?

We’re very intentional about this.
The Global Protagonists exists precisely because traditional voluntourism models often prioritise the experience of the visitor over the needs of conservation or local communities. We do the opposite.
Our missions are:
  • Designed around real conservation priorities, identified by local partners and field teams – not created for visitors
  • Embedded within existing projects, rather than running parallel or short-term interventions
  • Delivered in collaboration with local communities, rangers, scientists, and conservation organisations
  • Transparent by design, with clear financial reporting and measurable impact
We don’t support wildlife interactions for entertainment, photography, or “bucket list” moments. Participation only happens where it strengthens the work already underway and aligns with animal welfare and conservation best practice.
This is why we run missions, not trips. People aren’t added to conservation as an afterthought – they’re integrated where they are genuinely needed.

How physically demanding are the missions?

It depends on the mission.
Some missions involve long days in the field, uneven terrain, early starts, or variable weather. Others are less physically intense and focus more on monitoring, data collection, community engagement, or support roles.
Each mission page clearly outlines the physical expectations so you can make an informed decision. You don’t need to be an elite athlete, but you should be comfortable in a field-based environment and open to a bit of unpredictability – that’s part of real conservation work.
If you’re unsure, we’re always happy to talk it through with you.

How do you measure conservation impact?

Impact is central to everything we do.
Each mission is built around clearly defined conservation objectives, developed with our local partners. These might include things like animals protected, data collected, capacity built, equipment funded, or community initiatives supported.
We measure impact in three key ways:
  • Mission-level outcomes, captured in your personalised Impact Report at the end of the mission
  • Ongoing monitoring, where projects continue to be tracked beyond your time in the field
  • Annual Impact Reporting, which consolidates outcomes across all missions and is shared with all Global Protagonists and published publicly
This means you don’t just feel like you helped – you can see exactly what was achieved.

Where does my money actually go?

Your mission fee directly supports conservation work.
It covers:
  • Project costs and on-the-ground conservation activities
  • Equipment such as tracking collars, camera traps, vaccines, or monitoring tools
  • Training, wages, and support for local teams and partners
  • Logistics that make the work possible in remote or challenging environments
We don’t funnel funds into generic “experiences.” Your contribution is tied to real outcomes, which are documented in your Impact Report and our Annual Impact Report.
Transparency isn’t a buzzword for us – it’s a responsibility.

What does a typical day on a mission look like?

No two days – or missions – are exactly the same, and that’s intentional.
A typical day might include:
  • Morning briefings with the field team
  • Hands-on project work such as monitoring, data collection, training support, or conservation operations
  • Time spent with local partners, rangers, or community members
  • Learning sessions that provide context around the species, ecosystem, and challenges involved
  • Evenings to debrief, reflect, and understand how the day’s work fits into the bigger picture
You’re not just doing tasks – you’re learning why they matter, and how they connect to long-term conservation outcomes.
