Stand with the Team Protecting Rhinos on the Frontline

Each year in southern Africa, rhinos are lost to poaching at a pace conservationists are still fighting to slow. Behind every statistic is a relentless effort by wildlife veterinarians, rangers, and reserve teams working to protect the animals that remain.

This mission places you alongside those teams during one of the most important and urgent interventions in rhino conservation today.

Over the course of the week, our veterinary and conservation team will undertake a large-scale rhino protection operation across the Balule landscape, working with 25–30 white and black rhinos. The primary objective is rhino dehorning, a proven strategy used by reserves to dramatically reduce poaching risk by removing the incentive for criminal syndicates targeting horn.

At the same time, the team will deploy satellite horn pods on selected animals, allowing conservation teams to track rhino movement and monitor their safety in real time across the reserve. These small but powerful devices are helping transform the way rhinos are protected, turning animals that once disappeared silently into individuals whose movements can be watched and safeguarded.

Together, these efforts form part of a larger conservation strategy – one that combines veterinary intervention, technology, and boots-on-the-ground protection to give rhino populations a fighting chance.

Participants on this mission do not simply observe conservation. You will work directly alongside the veterinarians and conservation professionals carrying out these operations – from early morning tracking and helicopter-supported fieldwork to the careful veterinary procedures required to safely immobilise and protect these extraordinary animals.

This is demanding, real-world conservation work in one of Africa’s most iconic landscapes. It is also a rare opportunity to witness, firsthand, the extraordinary level of effort required to keep rhinos alive.

By joining the mission, you are not only supporting the operation itself – you are standing with the teams who refuse to let these animals disappear.

HIGHLIGHTS

Large-Scale Rhino Protection Operation

Join one of the most significant rhino protection operations conducted in the region, working alongside experienced wildlife veterinarians and conservation teams as they dehorn and safeguard 25–30 white and black rhinos across the reserve.

Work Beside the Veterinary Team

Step into the world of frontline wildlife medicine. From tracking and helicopter-supported fieldwork to assisting with veterinary procedures on the ground, you’ll experience firsthand what it takes to safely immobilise, treat, and protect one of Africa’s most iconic species.

Cutting-Edge Rhino Monitoring Technology

Witness the deployment of satellite horn pods, small but powerful devices that allow conservation teams to track rhino movement and respond rapidly to threats. These tools are helping transform how rhinos are protected in high-risk landscapes.

Immersive Conservation Experience

This is not a spectator experience. You’ll live and work alongside the conservation professionals protecting these animals every day, gaining a rare behind-the-scenes view of the strategy, teamwork, and urgency required to keep rhinos safe.

A Landscape Worth Protecting

Based in the heart of the Greater Kruger ecosystem, the mission unfolds in one of Africa’s most extraordinary wildlife landscapes – a place where elephants, lions, and rhinos still roam free, and where the future of these species is being fought for every day.

WHAT YOU'LL DO & WHY IT MATTERS

What You’ll Do
  • Participate hands-on in rhino dehorning and satellite collaring alongside wildlife vets and reserve teams
  • Immobilize and assist in anesthesia monitoring and capture procedures under expert guidance
  • Work as part of a small, dedicated field team in truly remote wilderness surrounded by iconic African wildlife

Why This Matters

Rhinos in southern Africa continue to face intense poaching threats – often with a rhino killed every day for its horn. Dehorning remains one of the most effective immediate interventions available to reduce poaching risk and buy time for longer-term protection measures.

ACCOMODATION & LOGISTICS

Arrival & Departure

Participants should arrive into Hoedspruit Airport (HDS) on Sunday 17 May. Hoedspruit is a short domestic flight from Johannesburg and serves as the gateway to many of South Africa’s leading conservation areas bordering Kruger National Park.

We will meet you on arrival and transfer the group to our reserve accommodation in the Balule landscape, where the mission will be based for the week.

On departure, you can book any flight out of Hoedspruit on Saturday 24 May. Our team will coordinate transfers back to the airport in time for departing flights.

Accommodation & Logistics

For the duration of the mission we will be based at a private wildlife reserve in the Hoedspruit region, immersed in one of South Africa’s most important conservation landscapes.

Accommodation is comfortable but field-oriented, providing an authentic experience of working alongside conservation teams in a functioning wildlife reserve. Wildlife is frequently seen around camp, and evenings are often spent reflecting on the day’s operations and preparing for upcoming fieldwork.

What’s included:
• Comfortable and private accommodation on the reserve
• All meals provided (dietary requirements catered for)
• Airport transfers and all ground transport during the mission
• Full-time support from our leadership and conservation teams

Expect real field conditions – this is working conservation country, and that is very much part of the experience.

Radical Transparency, Real Impact

When you step into this mission, you’re not just showing up — you’re directly funding every piece of it. Your contribution makes the clinics possible, covers the medicines and surgical supplies, puts beehive fences in the ground, and pays for Maasai children to see elephants and lions in the wild for the very first time.

Nothing abstract. No mystery. Every dollar goes straight into the work you’ll be part of. At the end of the mission, you’ll receive a breakdown of exactly what was achieved — and the story you helped write.
